Off the beaten path in Interlaken
Delight in a mystical alpine forest and secluded valley away from the tourist crowds.
Service Description
We will begin our hike in the village of Wilderswil and make our way to the small mountain village of Saxeten, home to just about 100 residents and nestled in a peaceful valley of the same name. The first part of our journey leads us through the magical Sytiwald Forest, high above the dramatic Saxeten Gorge—a site of a tragic canyoning accident in 1999 that claimed the lives of 20 young men and women. Upon reaching the village of Saxeten, we’ll have the chance to relax in the surrounding alpine meadows. Depending on the season, we might be lucky enough to see carpets of colorful mountain flowers in full bloom. If you wish, we can also stop by a local cheese or honey producer—just remember to bring some cash if you’d like to purchase anything. For our lunch stop, we’ll continue toward the end of the valley, where two beautiful waterfalls—the Saxetbachfall and Wyssebachfall—cascade down into the valley. We’ll enjoy our meal right at the foot of these falls, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. On the way back, the path takes us through Schwendi, where after a climb through a steep, wooded slope—with steel cables providing safety at two slightly exposed sections—the view opens up over the Lütschine Valley. From here, even the majestic Eiger comes into sight. Continuing on, we reach Aabeberg, where the former Pension Abendberg, now privately owned, offers a breathtaking view of Lake Brienz from what was once the hotel terrace. Further along, we come to Fürst, a charming forest rest area with benches, a wooden table, a small shelter, a fire pit, and a bubbling fountain—an ideal place to pause and rest. Our final stop is Heimwehfluh, a viewpoint above Interlaken that offers various attractions, including a toboggan run and a large model railway display. To end the day, those who wish can shorten the descent by taking the nostalgic funicular railway down to the town.
